Damn Yankees

Baseball has always been one of my favorite things about summer. Not playing it, of course - I am the least athletic person on the planet. But watching baseball has been a family tradition my whole life, from Spring Training games in sunny South Florida to watching the Gators go to the College World Series. While I love the optimism of opening day and the stress of the postseason, there is nothing quite like baseball in the summer. It's early enough that everyone still has a chance, but late enough that the competition is starting to get to people. It's hot as Hades outside, and yet you want nothing more than to snuggle up with 50,000 of your closest friends and scream your lungs out. It is a beautiful thing.

And now it's honesty hour. While I aspire to become a true New Yorker, there is one thing I absolutely refuse to compromise on. I moved around a lot as a kid, and there are only two places we ever really went back to: Disney World (more on that later) and Scituate, Massachussetts. That's right. Deep down, I am nothing but a Masshole. And six months out of every year, my Southie side consumes my South Shore side. You see, I tend to pick fights with people who root for the Evil Empire. I can't help it. I was born into Red Sox Nation.

Fenway, 1994. You know you're jealous of my sweet hat & horrible teeth.

Fenway, 15 years later.

So naturally, I had to accept when I was asked last minute if I wanted to attend a Sox-Yankees game in The New Yankees Stadium (read that name as though you are an announcer and something big has happened, like "This is the first home run in The New Yankees Stadium!" or "It's the first fat guy to spill a beer on himself on the jumbotron in The New Yankees Stadium!"). I made a promise to myself: I would wear colors, but no logos. I would speak only if spoken to. And I would hide between the two taller, male Sox fans who would be accompanying our group. I would be the classiest Red Sox fan the Yankees had ever met, gracious to my hosts and a kind winner. And I would be a winner. Because the Red Sox were going to kick some pinstriped ass.

And they did. They swept the Yankees, part of a nine-game winning streak that ended with a loss to the Rays last night. And I'm happy to say that no one said an unkind word to me. As a whole, Yankees fans were nice to me... I mean no one talked to me, but you know what they say, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Nice work, Yankees fans. You were good sports. And your stadium served really good chicken fingers (trust me, I KNOW chicken fingers).

Now, I lived in Rays territory for approximately four years; during two of those years, the Rays actually had fans. Oh no she didn't! Pick up your face, girl. You know if you're from Florida with very few exceptions (Hi Haticses!) you have rooted for a team other than your hometown for the majority of your life - because for the majority of your life, your team either did not exist or was completely awful. If you are from Tampa, until approximately 2008, you rooted for the Yankees. If you are one of the few loyal, nonbandwagon fans, I do not need to apologize to you, because I am not talking to you; otherwise, I will not apologize to you. You know what you are.

Anyway. I lived in Rays territory for approximately four years, and I have lived in New York City for approximately one. During my time here, I have worn my Fenway shirt and walked safely through the streets. I have openly cheered for the Sox/against the Yankees in bars and had people quietly accept it (in fact, once I got a free drink). I have been to a game featuring two of the biggest rivals in all of sports history, in enemy territory, and emerged completely unscathed. Meanwhile, in Florida, I got crap on a daily basis for being a Red Sox fan. This is not an attack on the Rays - I'm talking Cubs fans, Marlins fans, fans of all shapes and sizes. So why the heck are New Yorkers so docile? Is it because so many of us are from so many places? Or is there something else going on here?

I love to fight about baseball as much as the next person. But I, like most of the sensible, rational fans I've met up here (Hi Dana!), will admit when a player is good and when a fan knows his or her stuff. Of course I love my team, but, more importantly, I love the game. All I'm saying is, you gotta get both sides down pat - know when to stick your neck out, and know when to back down. Realize that maybe walking up to people in baseball caps and yelling at them is not exactly the way to make friends. And, as a bonus, you should probably memorize the entire active roster of your team, because at some point, someone is going to ask you who plays a certain position, you are going to blank because he's only been playing for your team for a year, and you will then lose all credibility as a fan. Definitely not speaking from experience.

So thank you, New York Yankees. Your fans might not be that bad after all (except for those involved in the two fights that resulted in ejections - those guys suck). That being said, I look forward to continuing to watch my boys sweep yours for the rest of the season and/or my lifetime. Speaking of which, shout out to my favorite Yankees fan, my brother-in-law, who is celebrating his birthday today. Happy Birthday Dave! I made this out of cardboard and glitter just for you.

Freeky Friday: Sweet Summer Evenings

Freeky Friday

It's officially the first Freeky Friday! This week's topic is:

We're all getting psyched for summer. What plans are you most looking forward to?

This is my first summer in New York City, and while I am, of course, looking forward to visiting my sister in The A, there are about a million and one things I want to do in NYC in the next few months! A few of my friends and I got together and organized an NYC Summer Bucket list to keep track of all of it. While most of these aren't firm plans yet, here are a few things on the list I'm really excited about.

(Source: Nummy Nims)

I'm a total theatre geek, and I'm an old school theatre geek. What can I say? The Bard just speaks to me. I've wanted to see Shakespeare in the Park since I was a little girl. This summer they'll be doing two plays I've never read, "Measure for Measure" and "All's Well That Ends Well." It's kind of an all day thing to get tickets & see the show, but it's totally free, and they cast the best of the best. It's a New York classic! And speaking of New York classics...

I've seen the Brooklyn Bridge from both sides - Brooklyn Heights and South Street Seaport in Manhattan - but I've never actually walked it. While there is something about walking across the East River that kind of worries me, it is supposed to be a totally magical experience. Plus, some of the best pizza in the world is on the other side of that bridge. That's worth crossing a body of water for.

As you can see from the photo above, I've already done a little bit of celebrity stalking. I went to the set of The Amazing Spider-Man twice - once to see a stunt scene being filmed in Harlem, and once to capture this lovely photo of Andrew Garfield and his parents in the Upper West Side (how precious!). There are a bunch of movies & TV shows being filmed in NYC this summer, not to mention free concerts, talk show guests, and Broadway shows with stage doors to stand outside. One of the best parts about living in this city is all of the fabulous people you can hobnob with if you look hard enough.

Hi Ben Stiller! You are the first celebrity I've ever stalked!
(Photo by my friend Marla after we saw House of Blue Leaves, which was fabulous)

Of course, there are a ton of other things on the list, including a bunch of restaurants, outdoor film screenings, and museums to hide in when it's 100 degrees outside. But the best part of all of this is the people I'll be doing all of these things with. In undergrad, summers were a weird time. If I stayed in Gainesville, most of my friends went home. If I lived with my mom in South Florida, most of my friends were in Gainesville. I developed a habit of becoming nomadic in the summers; two years ago I traveled pretty much non-stop for two months! I'm really looking forward to staying in the city this summer and, for the first time ever, having all of my New York friends stay in the city too. It feels like we're finally growing up and this is becoming home. What more could I possibly ask for?

Dressed Head To Toe In Love

When I first decided realized I was moving to New York, I asked all of my friends who were from, had lived in, or frequently visited the Tri-State Area for advice. Most people said simple things like "don't spend too much money" or "buy an air conditioner; the summers are brutal" (note to past self: they were right). But one guy gave me something a little deeper: "Just remember that real life isn't Sex and the City." Huh. That's actually not bad advice, I thought to myself. It combines the simple lines I had gotten from everyone else and added an element of "don't feel bad about yourself if you don't have time to enjoy it, because no one does." I've tried to keep this in mind whenever I feel like I'm living in the library or dressing like a slob or totally broke.

But lately, I can't help but wonder... why can't my life be Sex and the City?

(Source: NY Post)

At it's core, Sex and the City is really just a show about a group of young professional women living in New York City, looking for love and having fun along the way. What part of that doesn't sound like my life? Okay, the young professional part, I'll give you that. Grad school is definitely a different lifestyle... one that there aren't too many shows about because they would be really boring. But when I'm not in the library, I'm in the city. I'm single. I'm with my fabulous girlfriends. I'm writing a blog... which is like a column, only I don't get paid. I'm shopping. I'm schmoozing. I'm having a good time. Sure, the dresses I wear are cheaper and the bars I go to are a little less classy, but apart from that, there isn't a big fundamental difference.

So what part of this should I not be emulating? Maybe some better advice would have been, "Make your life as much like Sex and the City as you possibly can. Remember to look fabulous (when you have time) because you never know who is watching you walk by. Remember to have fun in this incredible city. Remember who is important above all the BS." Not a bad thing to keep in mind.

Introducing Freeky Friday

My sister blog and I (seriously, she's my sister in real life) are freeking psyched to announce that we are co-sponsoring a new series. We are pleased to introduce to you Freeky Friday! In this series, contributors will spread positivity, unity, and love by responding to a freeking awesome weekly prompt. But seriously, what's with the overuse of the word "freek"?

I’m glad you asked! Once upon a time, there was a boy. I mean, a man. Kind of more of a man-boy. This man-boy was our cousin, Mark. We’re referring to him as a “man-boy” because he had a passion for life that most boring adults outgrow.

Mark was the kind of guy that would follow you around with a camcorder singing Barney songs, just to see how you would react. His favorite ride at Disney World was the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (otherwise known as The Peoplemover) because who wouldn’t think it was hilarious to circumnavigate far more entertaining rides while traveling at the exhilarating speed of 2 mph? When Disney’s Hercules was playing in theaters, we were forced to go see it because it was the only way to get Mark to stop repeating, “Let’s.  Go.  See.  HERCULES!” He was our greatest source of laughter, he was the big brother who always came to our rescue, he was our hero.

When Mark was in his late 20s, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. Instead of succumbing to the negativity surrounding him, Mark chose to channel his energy into something creative. Freekware was born.

Freekware, Mark’s clothing line, became an artistic outlet to occupy his time while he was in and out of treatment. Of course, we all supported it and couldn’t get enough of the goods! And we weren’t the only ones...

Yeah, thats P-Nut, the bassist of 311. Because that’s how awesome Mark was.

When Mark passed away in 2005, Freekware became his legacy. His sisters have taken over the company and it continues to expand to this day. Best of all, the proceeds benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in order to help other courageous badasses like Mark.

Last summer, when that photo was taken, I overheard my cousin Jen telling my younger cousins what Freekware is. The littlest one is too young to remember Mark; Jen asked her if she knew him, and she replied "no, but I know that I love him," (Is your heart melting? My heart melted.). Jen proceeded to give both of the girls a pep talk. She told them that when they wear Freekware, they are invincible. Mean girls don't matter - they're really only jealous of you. Stupid boys don't matter - they have no idea what they're missing. Bad grades don't matter - you just have to learn from it. As I listened to her indoctrinate the younger generation with the Freekware philosophy, I realized that the little issues in life that get people down never really change. I still get upset about boys, bitches, and B's. If you let those things bother you, you'll be in a constant state of misery.

To me, that's what Freekware is all about. It's taking the stupid crap that life throws at you and learning to brush it off your shoulders. It's about turning it around and seeing the positive in everything - and everyone. It's about loving who you are and what you have. And when I wear Freekware, I AM invincible. I walk into a room and declare to the world, "Hell yea, I'm a Freek! I am damn proud of it!" Best of all, it brings all of us together. It is everything that was beautiful about Mark, everything that is beautiful about my family.

Freekware is more than just a clothing line… it’s a lifestyle. Spread the Soul. Share the Strength. Embrace who you are and be proud to be a FREEK.

Do you wanna join the Freeks? Just share some positivity every Friday by answering the prompt that we provide. Your first mission:

We’re all getting psyched for summer. What plans are you most looking forward to?

Post your answer on June 10th and comment here with your link. Be sure to include the badge at the top of this post...we've conveniently included the html for you!

If you do not have a blog, you can still participate via Facebook and/or Twitter! The weekly prompt will be posted on the Freekware Facebook page every Friday. Simply "like" Freekware and comment on the prompt! Or, you can briefly answer the prompt via Twitter with the tag #FreekyFriday. If you can't decide between a blog post, Facebook, or Twitter, feel free to do all three!

But wait, there's more! All contributions for the month of June will be entered to win some Brownie-covered Oreos as well as a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society in your name. So, if you blog on all three remaining Fridays in the month of June, you'll be entered three times! If you blog, tweet, and comment on Facebook all three Fridays, you'll be entered nine times! Get to it! Oh, and be sure to check out the Freekware Facebook page in the meantime!
