Welcome to the first Freeky Friday of August! Today's topic:

If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?

I've had a love affair with Boston my whole life. I spent many summers on South Shore, and we would always venture into the city to explore a little. In 2004, I had the opportunity to do a summer at Boston University for a theatre program; it changed my life. Not only did I form amazing friendships and realize just how independent I am capable of being, it reaffirmed my love of Boston and showed me that I was born to live in a big city. While I went back to visit in 2005 and in winter 2009, it wasn't until my visit last month that I really saw just how important Boston is to me.

I love the history...

...and the scenery...

...and the sports.

But most of all, I love the wonderful memories I share with some of my favorite people.

Hey Freek Nation! Welcome to our first Freeky Friday for the month of July! Today's topic:

What's your favorite Fourth of July memory?
(For our international Freeks, we still want to hear about your favorite summer memories!)

I find that a lot of holidays set themselves up for disappointment. For example, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed New Year's. The Fourth of July is not one of those holidays. Every year, it comes at just the right time - in the middle of summer, when everyone is free of responsibilities and ready for some fun! I've had so many wonderful Independence Days, from fireworks on the National Mall when I was a kid to the best 311 show I've ever seen in Atlanta a few years ago. But one of the best things about America is our traditions.

Before I continue, I'd like to introduce y'all to someone special. Meet one of my oldest and dearest friends, Meredith.

Please don't hate me.

Meredith and I have been friends since sixth grade, when I thought she was cool and was friends with cool people, so I invited her to my birthday party. A few days later she invited me to join her and her cool friends in a group project for our Social Studies class. Geez, remember how easy it was to meet people when you were a kid? Anyway, the rest is history. Meredith, Didi, Stephanie and I were inseparable throughout middle & high school.

Unfortunately, my best friends are brilliant, and we all had to follow our dreams. I went to the University of Florida, Stephanie went to Florida State University, Meredith went to the University of Miami, and Didi flew north to Boston University. Even though we were spread across the eastern seaboard, we tried to stay in touch as much as possible. Even if we hadn't talked for months, the minute I saw any of these lovely ladies, it felt like nothing had changed. Every holiday was a chance for a reunion. Our most recent reunion? My sister's wedding!

I know, you wish your friends were as beautiful as mine.

Okay, so what does all of this have to do with the Fourth of July? I have spent most of my recent Fourths with Meredith and her family. In fact, summer as always been our season. Whether we're seeing a Marlins game...

Or seeing a summer blockbuster (in this case, The Dark Knight)...

Or just goofing around...

...whatever we do, it is bound to be entertaining. And it is most likely to include us making weird faces and taking pictures of ourselves. I love spending the Fourth of July with Mer & her fam (especially when her sister makes her amahzing apple pie!) because it means that something in this crazy mixed up world has stayed the same after all of these years. It is so beautiful to know that some friends will always be there.

Meredith is in law school here in NYC, Stephanie is in Florida pursuing a career in dentistry, and Didi is still in Boston working on her MD. Did I mention my best friends are brilliant? This weekend, Meredith and I will be shipping up to Boston to visit Didi, and I can't wait! Not only will I be continuing my tradition of spending my fourths with Meredith, but I'll be doing it in one of my favorite (and one of the most patriotic) cities! There will be cooking, bar hopping, touristing, and probably some shopping. And of course, we'll have to Skype Stephanie in to some of the fun!
